The Non-Cooperation Movement started with the participation of middle-class people in the cities. Many professors and administrators quit their positions at government-run schools and colleges, and lawyers stopped practising law. Thousands of students also deserted these institutions. Large bonfires were lit to burn foreign clothing, foreign items were boycotted, and liquor stores were picketed. Indian textile mills and handloom output increased as the boycott movement gained traction, and more people switched from wearing imported clothing to Indian-made clothes.
