The normal at any point $(x_1,y_1)$ of curve is a line perpendicular to tangent at the point $(x_1,y_1)$. In case of parabola $y^2=4ax$, the equation of normal is $y=mx-2am-a{m}^3$ (m is slope of normal). The shortest distance between any two curves always exist along the common normal.
