Germany waged a genocidal war under the shadow of the Second World War against selective groups of innocent European civilians. Genocide refers to the mass killing and destruction of large groups of people. The genocidal war during the Second World War killed 6 million Jews, 1 million Polish civilians, 200,000 Gypsies, 70,000 Germans who were mentally and physically disabled, and numerous political opponents. Nazis adopted an unprecedented means of killing these groups of people by gassing them in concentration camps like the one in Auschwitz. Retribution for their crimes came through the Nuremberg Tribunal, which sentenced eleven prominent Nazis to death and imprisoned many for life. However, this punishment of Nazis fell short of the brutality they unleashed on the innocents. The Allies preferred not to be as harsh as they were after the First World War against defeated Germany.
