Salivary glands are exocrine glands, which secrete saliva and an enzyme (called salivary amylase or ptyalin) that breaks down starch into maltose. In human, there are three pairs of salivary glands - parotid gland (major and the largest among three), submandibular gland and sublingual gland. They secrete saliva to facilitate mastication and swallowing and to begin the digestion of starches.
