The number of seats reserved for women in the panchayats and municipalities is one-third of the total number of seats.
In 1992, a step towards decentralisation was taken. It divided the powers between the centre, state, and local governments. By the 73rd and the 74th Constitutional Amendments, local self-governance was introduced in rural and urban India. Panchayats were established in rural areas and municipalities in urban areas. This step was taken to encourage the participation of citizens in decision-making. Governance at the grassroots level is more efficient as there is a better understanding of the issues and problems. Elections were made mandatory for local government bodies. Seats were also reserved for Women, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. One-third of seats were reserved for women for their fair and proper participation in decision-making.
