In the presence of a blood banner, which represented Germany's tyrannical leader, the boys took an oath of loyalty at the end of their preliminary training in which they swore to devote all their energies and strength to the country's saviour, i.e., Hitler. The oath ended with the children's assertion that they were willing to give up their life for him. After preliminary training, the children were expected to enter Jungvolk and train until they were 14. At 14, boys had to join Hitler Youth, where they were taught to worship war, condemn democracy, glorify violence and aggression, hate Gypsies, communists, Jews, and all those considered undesirable. At 18, they were expected to enrol in the Labour Service and serve in the armed forces.
