In 2020, the Parliament of India passed a bill making Kashmiri an official language of Jammu and Kashmir, along with Dogri, Hindi, English, and Urdu. Kashmiri is also one of the 22 scheduled languages of India.

Kashmiri has a unique grammar system, including part-ergativity and a rare verb-second word order. There are around 6.8 million people who speak Kashmiri and related dialects—mostly in the Kashmir Valley and Chenab Valley of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as among the Kashmiri diaspora in other Indian states.

Kashmiri is also spoken in parts of Pakistan, especially in Azad Kashmir, including the Neelam Valley, Leepa Valley, and Haveli district. The exact number of Kashmiri speakers there is not confirmed, but estimates range from 130,000 (2012) to 350,000 (2017).

Kashmiri was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and was also part of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir. The government plans to promote and develop Kashmiri along with other regional languages listed in the Sixth Schedule, as well as Hindi and Urdu.
