factors. They were a type of trader. On the banks of the river Hugli, the first English factory was built in 1651. The Company's factors operated out of this location. The factory contained offices where Company representatives sat in addition to storage where goods for export were kept. The Company convinced traders and merchants to move close to the factory as trade increased.
