New Mangalore is the only Major Port in the State of Karnataka.
The New Mangalore Port, a small water all-weather port with the deepest inner harbour on the west coast, is the only important port. It is run by the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA). Karavali, Karnataka's coastline, stretches 300 kilometres between Mangalore in Dakshina Kannada district and Karwar in Uttara Kannada district. The Department of Ports and Inland Water Transport, established in 1957, is in charge of port development. Between Mangalore in the south and Karwar in the north, the Department operates one major and ten minor ports. The minor ports are Karwar, Old Mangalore, Belekeri, Tadadi, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Kundapur, Hangarkatta, Malpe, and Padubidri. The one at Karwar is the only all-weather port, with the others being riverine fair-weather lighterage ports.
