The early nineteenth century saw a slight increase in wages. Despite this development, much cannot be said regarding the welfare of the workers. For example, during the protracted Napoleonic War, when prices climbed substantially, the actual value of the workers' earnings decreased significantly because the same wages could now only buy a smaller number of goods.
