The Oraons were from Jharkhand.
Many people lost their livelihoods when the British government took control of forests. They couldn’t conduct any trading activities as well. The government hired communities like Gonds from Chhattisgarh and Santhals and Oraons from Jharkhand to work on tea or coffee plantations. They were paid low wages, and the labour conditions were poor and hazardous. It was also difficult for them to visit their home villages from their work location as quickly as they would have liked.
