Concept: The Earth is divided into layers. If the world were divided in half, the layers would resemble the inside of an onion.

The planet has a solid, extremely hot core. This is referred to as the inner core. The outer core, which is liquid, is the next layer. A layer of molten rock surrounds the core. The molten rock moves as if it were liquid.

The mantle is the name given to this middle layer. The higher part of the mantle solidifies. The crust, the outermost layer, is also solid. These solid parts are referred to collectively as the lithosphere.
