Detailed Solution

The paid agents of the East India Company were called the Gomasthas.
In India, the East India Company was particularly interested in Indian textiles because they were in high international demand. The Company attempted to control the weaver directly by getting rid of the traders and brokers involved in the textile trade. They appointed paid servants known as Gomasthas for this purpose, who would purchase items from nearby weavers and set their pricing. The Company chose the Gomasthas to get in touch with local weavers and dealers and do so in a way that would compel the dealers to work with the Company and offer the Company their wares. Gomasthas received payment for their efforts.
