The panchayat works under the overall supervision of the gram sabha.
A village or a group of villages together have a gram panchayat, the rural local government. Several ward members, called panch, form this council with one person as the head is called the Sarpanch. They have directly elected by all the eligible people in the village. Every voter in the village is a Gram Sabha member. The gram sabha authorises the funding of the gram panchayat. The gram sabha examines the enactment of the gram panchayat. Thus, the gram sabha holds meetings two or three times per year to keep a watch on the workings of the gram panchayat.
