The Paramhans Mandali was founded in 1840
Inequalities in caste were criticised by several social reformers. Old Buddhist writing that criticised caste was translated by Rammohun Roy. The Bhakti tradition, which held that all castes are spiritually equal, was upheld by the Prarthana Samaj. To promote the abolition of caste, the Paramhans Mandali was established in Bombay in 1840. The mandali also demanded that widow remarriage and education for women be acknowledged by society as norms. Upper caste individuals made up a large portion of these reformers and reform association members. To break the hold caste discrimination had over their life, these reformers frequently broke the taboos around food and touching in private gatherings.
