The ghetto is traditionally a street or section of a city designated as a Jewish-only neighbourhood. Traditionally, the ghettos were walled in with gates and walls and kept shut at night and during church holidays like Holy Week, when anti-Semitic outbursts were especially likely due to the perceived guilt of the Jews in the Crucifixion of Christ. Jews had independent institutions for their religious, legal, charitable, and recreational needs inside the ghetto. Due to the impossibility of the ghetto's lateral growth, homes frequently had unusually high ceilings, which led to congestion, fire risks, and unhygienic conditions. Jews were required to wear identification outside the ghetto and were constantly at risk of harassment and physical violence.
