Detailed Solution

The partition that took place when the British colonial rule ended in 1947 was between India and Pakistan. Pakistan was earlier a part of India, but due to ideological and religious differences, both countries had to part ways. Jinnah played a crucial role in the formation of Pakistan. After much protestation, the demand for the formation of Pakistan was accepted by the colonial government and the interim government of India led by Jawaharlal Nehru. The rulers of the princely states were given the power to decide whether they wished to remain independent or join India or Pakistan. The partition was a traumatic experience for people on both sides of the border, with up to 10 lakh people losing their lives to partition-related violence.
