Disruptive (diversifying) selection occurs when extreme phenotypes have a fitness advantage over more intermediate phenotypes. In disruptive selection, more individuals acquire peripheral character value at both ends of the distribution curve. Suppose a population of mice is living at a beach where there is light-coloured sand interspersed with patches of tall grass. The light-coloured mice that blend in with the sand would escape from predators. The dark-coloured mice that can hide in the grass also escape from predators.
