Detailed Solution

The peasants of Champaran were encouraged to struggle against the oppressive plantation system. In 1916, Mahatma Gandhi visited the Champaran district of Bihar and inspired the peasants of Champaran to protest against the plantation system. This came to be known as the Champaran Satyagraha. This was the first Satyagraha organised by Mahatma Gandhi upon his return from South Africa. He started Satyagraha when he saw the Indian peasants exploited by the colonial government to grow indigo. It was the first Satyagraha. In the Champaran district, peasants were forced to grow indigo without getting any payment for their labour.
