In the healthy functioning of democracy, the Panchayati Raj system plays a vital role. It helps democracy to achieve decision-making and policy-making at the grassroots level. It enables local people to participate in the village administration. Gram sabha is one of the institutions of local self-government. It is PRI's primary and permanent body (Panchayati Raj Institutions). All the people of the village who attain 18 years of age and are eligible for the right to vote are members of the Gram Sabha. The gram panchayat area is divided into many wards, and every qualified person looks at each community and elects a ward member as their representative. This ward member is also called a panch.
