The people or community were generally referred to as the Jana in ancient times.
Jana is a sanskrit word which means "people" or community. In ancient times, "jana" referred to a tribe in the Vedic samhitas whose members shared a common genealogy. A king served as the head of the Janas. These janas lived in what was referred to as a grama, or village. A region inhabited by Janas was occasionally referred to as a Janpada. Even today, the members of Parliament elected are referred to as "jan pratinidhi," or public representatives.
