The period after 1990 saw the rise of regional political parties in India. After the independence of India in 1947, the same political party ruled the centre as well as most of the states. In the states in which the rival political party ruled, the central government put undue pressure on them, and they would often dismiss the state government by misusing the power that was conferred on them by the Indian Constitution. The scenario changed after 1990 when there was a rise in regional political parties. These regional political parties not only formed their governments in their respective states but also helped in the formation of government at the central level, which came to be known as a coalition government.
