The Planning Commission was set up to form the Five Year Plans.
The Planning Commission was set up in the year 1950 by the government of India. The main task of the Commission was to allocate short and long-term goals for the economic development and prosperity of the country. The leaders felt that this could be achieved via the formation of Five Year Plans which would help in devising a model and enable the leaders to understand which sector needs to be developed. The First Five Year Plan was initiated in the same year in 1951 and focused on the primary or agriculture sector. The Second Five Year Plan initiated in the year 1956, shifted this focus to the manufacturing sector or the secondary sector and emphasised heavy industries such as steel.
