The epicenter (or hypocenter) of an earthquake is the place on Earth where the earthquake starts. The epicenter of an earthquake is the place directly above the focus on the earth's surface. During an earthquake, the most violent tremors occur at the epicenter. Sometimes the earth's surface cracks through a fault. Sometimes the movement occurs deep below and does not disturb the surface.
