Detailed Solution

The policy of censorship in India was first implemented by the East India Company in the 19th century. The Calcutta Supreme Court established a number of restrictions on press freedom by the 1820s, and the Company started promoting the establishment of journals that would glorify British rule. Governor-General Bentinck consented to change the press rules in 1835 after receiving urgent appeals from editors of English and regional publications. The perception of press freedom shifted with the uprising of 1857. Angry Englishmen urged that the "native" press be suppressed. The colonial authorities took strict control measures as local newspapers started to take a strong nationalist stance.
