Detailed Solution

The political causes of the revolt of 1857 are The expansionist policy of Dalhousie.
The revolt of 1857 had many causes that led to such a popular uprising. The political cause of the revolt is recognized as the expansionist policy of Lord Dalhousie. Lord Dalhousie adopted the Doctrine of a lapse to bring kingdoms under British control. The kingdom had to be placed under British authority if the king passed away without a male successor, following the Doctrine of Lapse. The adopted son could not claim the throne. The states annexed by this policy were Nagpur, Satara, Jhansi, etc. Furthermore, the British regarded Bahadur Shah as the last emperor of India. This enraged the feelings of those who were nostalgic for a mighty Mughal rule.
