Detailed Solution

The Poona Pact took place in 1932. At the Second Round Table Conference, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, who founded the Depressed Classes Association in 1930, fought against Mahatma Gandhi by demanding separate electorates for Dalits. When the British government granted Ambedkar's request, Gandhiji began fasting. Separate electorates for Dalits, he argued, will delay the pace of their similarity in society. Ambedkar finally agreed with Gandhi's view, which resulted in the Poona Pact of September 1932. He granted reserved seats in provincial and state legislatures to the depressed classes (later known as scheduled castes), though they had to vote for the general community. On the other hand, the Dalit movement remained wary of the ANC-led national party.
