The Poona Pact was signed in September 1932.
Gandhi started a fast until death when the British administration agreed to Ambedkar's demand for separate electorates for the Dalits. In his opinion, separate voting electorates for Dalits would impede their incorporation into the mainstream. In the end, Ambedkar agreed with Gandhi, and the Poona Pact of September 1932 resulted. It provided reserved seats in provincial and national legislative bodies for the Depressed Classes (later referred to as Schedule Castes), but these seats had to be voted by the general electorate. However, the Dalit movement remained apprehensive of the Congress-led national movement.
