Detailed Solution

The Poona Pact was signed in 1932. B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi negotiated the Poona Pact in late September 1932. The Communal Award of August 1932, which reserved 71 seats in the central assembly for the oppressed classes, provided the impetus for the Poona Pact. According to the Award, the lower castes and other religious communities were to get separate electorates each. Gandhi, who opposed the Communal Award and believed it was a British attempt to divide Hindus, started a fast until his death in order to have it overturned. Finally, Ambedkar agreed to sign the Poona Pact that abolished the separate electorate system and assured the lower castes(Scheduled Castes/Dalits) of reservations in the provincial legislatures.
