The poor started fleeing their villages in the nineteenth century in search of jobs that were opening up in the cities. Many of the low caste poor from rural areas and small towns were migrating to urban areas where there was a new need for labour. Others travelled to work on plantations in Indonesia, Trinidad, Mauritius, and Assam. The work was frequently exceedingly difficult in the new places. However, some from lower castes who were poor saw this as a chance to escape the harsh control that upper-caste landowners had over their life as well as the everyday humiliation they endured.
