The Prathana Samaj supported the Bhakti tradition, which believed that people from all gender, castes, and religion must be treated equally and given the same status. However, some social reformers criticised caste discrimination, like Rammohun Roy and Atmaram Pandurang. Atmaram Pandurang established the Prathana Samaj in 1867 to campaign for the removal of caste exploitation and inequalities. They also supported and encouraged women to get educated.
