Detailed Solution

The pre-colonial important ports of India were Surat, Hooghly and Masulipatam. The pre-colonial Indian trade depended on the three most important ports on the Indian coastline, the port of Surat situated in Gujarat, the port of Hooghly in West Bengal and the port of Masulipatam on the Coromandel coast. The reason which made these ports essential were- these areas had the availability of raw materials, presence of cheap labour, convenient transportation, these served as developing centres of trade, and these coasts had sea routes linked to international waterways.
