The Prime Minister of India addressed the nation of India on Independence Day from the ramparts of Red Fort in Delhi, which was the residence of the Mughal Emperors.
The historic fort in Old Delhi, the Red Fort or Lal Qila, served as a residence of the Mughal emperors. On 12 May 1638, Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the construction of the Red Fort when he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi. During Nadir Shah's invasion of the Mughal empire in 1739, the fort was plundered with artwork and jewels.
