Detailed Solution

The principal lignite reserves are used for the production of electricity. Coal is the most important energy source and is classified into four types: anthracite, bituminous, lignite and peat. Lignite is low-grade coal containing 40 to 55 per cent carbon. It is dark to black-brown, and the moisture content is high (around 35 per cent). It is the lowest coal rank and is highly hazardous to human health. In India, lignite coal is mainly found in Tamil Nadu, followed by Rajasthan, Gujarat, Kerala, West Bengal, Jammu, Kashmir, and Puducherry.
