The printing press first came to Goa with Portuguese missionaries. The Portuguese arrived in India in the late 1400s, precisely in Kappad, a beach in Kerala, Calicut. The print culture arrived here in the mid-sixteenth century. Along with the Portuguese missionaries, some Jesuit priests also arrived to propagate religious ideas for making God’s country. The priests learned Konkani, a native language spoken in the regions of Goa. They printed several documents in this language too. According to their calculation, over fifty books had been printed in the Konkani and Kanara languages by 1674.
