The process of pouring out the clear upper liquid without disturbing the sediments is called decantation
Some insoluble solids suspended in a liquid can be separated by letting them settle down at the bottom, which is called sedimentation. The insoluble solid or the sediments settle at the bottom of the container, and the clear liquid/water, also known as supernatant, rises. This supernatant is poured out very carefully without disturbing the sediments in another container. This process of pouring out clear upper liquid is known as decantation.
