The process of separating grains from sun-dried stalks is called threshing.
The stalks are beaten to separate the grains from the bundle of stalks. This process is done either by hand or with the help of bullocks. Nowadays, threshing is done by machines called threshers. This method is based on the fact that the chaff and stalks of the crops are very soft, and grains are hard. Therefore, as the stalks are soft, they can be beaten, broken, and removed from the grains. But, on the other hand, as the grains are hard, they will be unaffected by the beating and will get separated.
