The process of setting heavy solid particles in a mixture at the bottom of the vessel is known as sedimentation.
Sedimentation is a process in which the heavy solid particles present in a mixture get settled at the bottom of the vessel. For example, sand sinks to the bottom of a glass filled with water when we combine the two, stir it with a spoon or another object, and then wait a while. Sediment is the term for the solid layer below and the supernatant layer for the transparent liquid layer above. In this case sand is the sediment and water is the supernatant.
