Detailed Solution

The process of skin shedding in silkworms is known as moulting.

Moulting is a natural process in which the silkworm sheds its skin and grows a new, larger one. Silkworms moult several times during their larval stage as they grow and develop. During this time the silkworm stops eating and becomes inactive. The skin splits along the back of the silkworm, and the silkworm wriggles out of its old skin, leaving behind a cast skin. The new skin is initially soft and pliable, but it soon hardens and darkens.

Moulting is an important process in the life cycle of the silkworm because it allows the silkworm to grow and develop, ultimately reaching the pupal stage and transforming into an adult silk moth.
