The smelting process is done in a Blast Furnace. Smelting is a process that involves heating ore until the metal becomes spongy and the chemical compounds in the ore start breaking down. Also, most importantly, oxygen starts released from the iron ore, which makes up a high percentage of iron ore. Smelting is carried out to remove light and earthy impurities from the metal involving fusion. A good example is the reduction of iron ore by coke in a blast furnace to produce pig iron.
