In the eighteenth century, Europe was marked by trade activity controlled by the guilds. Guilds were basically the association of the workers that dominated the whole production and trade. It trained the craftsmen to produce certain kinds of products. It also regulated the costs of the commodities, maintained competition, and maintained control over production. The guilds in the town also restricted the entry of new traders to eliminate competition. So, when world trade expanded the new merchants were not allowed to establish themselves in the town. They turned to the countryside to establish themselves. Moreover, monopoly rights were provided to the guilds by many rulers.
