Detailed Solution

The production in the countryside in 18th century Europe is termed Proto-industrialization.
Before the industrialization process, the production process in Europe was guided by guilds. But as new colonies were acquired and world trade expanded, the demand increased across the world. Many new merchants were involved in the trade. But they could not trade in the towns due to the domination of guilds. So they turned towards the countryside. The merchants associate with the peasants and artisans of the countryside. The peasants and artisans undertook the production process while the merchants were involved in the procurement, and supply of the goods for trade. This process of close association with merchants and artisans with decentralised production activity is termed proto-industrialization.
