When aqueous solution of NaCl is electrolysed , the following reaction takes place.

NaCl(aq)Na(aq)++Cl(aq)-+H(aq) ++OH(aq)-

According to preferential discharge theory, H+ is discharged at cathode and Cl- is discharged at anode.

Anode: 2Cl-Cl2+2e-(oxidation)

Cathode : 2H++2e-H2 (reduction )
