The properties of ionic compounds include: high melting and boiling point; brittle and soluble in water.
Ionic compounds are formed by electrostatic attraction between ions of opposite charges. This force of attraction is very strong which does not break easily and requires very high melting and boiling points. These compounds form crystals which can be broken into smaller pieces.
Ionic compounds are soluble in water but insoluble in inorganic solvents. The ionic compounds when present in aqueous phase break down into ions and conduct electricity due to mobility of ions.
