When blood flows from the right ventricle of the heart into the pulmonary artery, it carries low levels of oxygen and high levels of carbon dioxide. The blood then travels to the lungs, where it comes into contact with tiny air sacs called alveoli. Here, the blood picks up oxygen from the inhaled air and releases carbon dioxide, which is exhaled. The oxygen-rich blood is then carried back to the heart through the pulmonary veins and pumped out to the rest of the body by the left ventricle. This process is called respiration and is crucial for supplying the body with the oxygen it needs to function properly.
