Punjab was annexed by the British in 1849. Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the most outstanding Indian ruler of that time, conquered many of the states, but after his death, the Sikh power was weakened and then annexed. The British and Sikhs had a battle in which the Sikhs were defeated, and the treaty of Lahore was signed. After that, the second Anglo-Sikh war started, in which the Sikhs were defeated again, and then Dalhousie annexed Punjab in March 1949.
