Given, the ratio of the present ages of two brothers is 1: 2
Let the present ages be a and 2a and their ages 5 years back is a – 5 and 2a – 5
5 years back the ratio was 1:3
⇒ 3(a – 5) = 1(2a – 5)
⇒ 3a – 15 = 2a – 5
⇒ 3a – 2a = – 5 + 15
⇒ a = 10years
The age of one brother is 10.
2a = 2 × 10 = 20 years
The age of other brother is: 20 years.
Their ages after five years will be 15 and 25 years
Now we will find the ratio of their ages
i. e.
Therefore, option 3 is the correct option.
