The rDNA produced by Boyer and Cohen was introduced into E.coli  bacteria.

Boyer studied a couple of restriction enzymes of the E. coli  bacterium. These enzymes have the capability to cut the DNA strands in a particular fashion, which leave  ‘sticky ends’ on the strands.

Cohen studied about small ringlets of DNA, plasmids that can replicate independently. Cohen had developed a method of removing these plasmids from the cell and then reinserting them in other cells.

Boyer and Cohen combined their knowledge to recombine antibiotic resistant gene to  a plasmid from Salmonella typhimurium and insert this recombinant  DNA in host bacterial cells. This is the basis upon which the discipline of biotechnology was founded.
