Detailed Solution

Let the distance of white solid from NH3end = x cm

The distance of white solid from HBr end = (100 - x)cm

Rates of diffusion shall be proportional to these distances.

r1r2=x100-x=MHBrMNH3

Mol. mass of HBr = 1 + 80 = 81

Mol. mass of NH3 = 14 + 3 = 17

So, x100-x=8117 or, x100-x=2.18 So, x=100×2.18-2.18x or, 3.18x=100×2.18 So, x=100×2.183.18=68.55cm
