When CFCs are discharged into the atmosphere, they combine with other atmospheric gases and eventually reach the stratosphere. They are broken down by intense UV radiations in the stratosphere, generating chlorine-free radicals. After that, the chlorine-free radical combines with stratospheric ozone to produce chlorine monoxide radicals and molecular oxygen.
